Impluse buy- New Macbook

So I have needed a new laptop for the last few months.

Although I have one through my work which is perfectly fine for work related matters, my personal one has been slowing dying a painful death. Therefore I  went on the hunt for a new laptop last week. I researched and researched and talked to quite a few friends regarding the differences between Macs and PC’s and it was apparent that those own Macs swear by them and those who own PCs think those Mac owners are snobs. Not wanting to become part of the snob cult, I talked myself into the PC would. And being the good personal finance advocate that I am, I was ready to make my purchase until I visited a friend at his work (the new Apple Store in our city). Well that was a big mistake as while I was waiting for him, his colleague started showing me all the news features of the new software. I was sold within 5 minutes.

The odd thing is that I used Macs all throughout University and didn’t see the big deal in them until the moment that I picked one up and notice the lightness and great features on it.

In total I spent about $1500 for  my Macbook and a case for it.

That is twice what I had budgeted but I don’t regret it at all. It has motivated me to network and get more clients since it is remarkably fast and I can do different design work on it that I was not able to before. My old laptop didn’t have enough RAM thus I couldn’t install everything that I needed and  most of my design software was on my desktop. Since I am on the road so often, the desktop is rather useless to me. The sad part is that now I have $1500 charge sitting on my Visa that needs to be paid off asap.

For the record, I was about an inch away from purchasing an IPAD2 and Apple TV as well, but the inner frugalista in me made me stop, although if anyone has an IPAD that they would like to sell, send me an email.

In order to pay it off, I have picked up a new client, and hopefully a few more soon and am starting to contact all my clients who have outstanding invoices to pay. I hate the concept of interest charges now and I rather not pay them if I don’t have to.

Have you made an impulse buy lately, and how are you feeling about it now?

  1. All of my friends who use PC laptops SWEAR Macs are just overpriced and whatever, and they are more expensive, but they LAST. Like, seriously. I got my MacBook over five years ago when I started university, and it’s still running like a champ. My friends who got PC laptops are now on their second and third laptop, and the computers ran like crap for a while before they got around to replacing them! So while the sticker price is higher, if you look at it in terms of “cost per use,” I’d say it’s a bargain!

  2. You are the second PF blogger who ended up with a mac on impulse that I know lol.

I won’t get into the Mac vs. PC battle. You have to know what you need in a computer. Some people may not even need a full fledged computer. Some go buy macs and then all the do is check facebook.

You on the other hand will be using it for work so no argument from me.

  3. I am almost positive you can’t use the words “inner frugalist” when you are writing a post about purchasing a $1,500 laptop! lol

  4. Thanks to God that I don’t have a credit card because I could be impulsive as you’re.
But in any case, that’s a great purchase for every tech geek.
