Why I have 5 Different Side Hustles

Yes, you read that right! It’s true, I have five different side hustles. Before I get into the bulk of the post, I want to clarify a few things. I am an operations consultant and run my own consulting firm. I enjoy what I do, and love going to work everyday, and dealing with my client. You see, my job is help start-ups, and entrepreneurs scale their businesses, or well, build their businesses. The tricky thing with working for yourself is that the lack of income stability, and even though I’ve been booked solid for the last year, and pretty much the same for the next 14 months, I still find time for my side hustles.

Why you may ask? Well, the answer is two fold. I like being part of different activities, and like growing things. I also enjoy helping people (which is why I thrive in a consultative environment), but he most important part is that I like having income protection.

Side Hustles

Here are my 5 side hustles:

Conference

I am the founder of Canada’s first and only Fashion and Beauty Blogging Conference. Yeah, a PF blogger is running the show at a Fashion and beauty conference. The reason I got into that was because I saw a need, and wanted to act on it right away. Has it been easy? Hell no! It involves a ton of late nights and early mornings, but I adore my team, and we’re already planning on expanding. The tricky thing here is knowing that you’re not going to make much the first year, and that you need to keep pushing and re-investing anything that you do make. Most people tend to forget that part.

Consulting

I try not to do this very often as I do this for a living, but I have clients from every walk of life. I have bloggers, business owners, designers, and everything in between. While my rates are 1/10 what I normally charge my day-job clients, it’s great to able to sit down and have coffee with people and provide guidance and feedback when they need it most. The part that I love is being able to help ideas come to life, so if you’re sitting on an idea, or want to grow your blog or business, send me an email 😉

Blogging

I never thought of blogging as a side hustle until I did an inventory of the amount of time I spend on my sites. Yes, I said “sites” as in 3. Besides Thirty Six Months, I also run Finance Triggers with a friend, along with Chic Darling, which is a leading fashion, beauty and travel magazine. Again, this isn’t a hustle that I can make 10-15k a month from, but I enjoy being able to do all sorts of fun things outside the PF niche.

Creative Services

Similar to my consulting gig, I also work with brands to provide creative services for med-scale campaigns. Being one of the very people in the world who likes pitching, I have learned a thing or two about being able to execute campaigns to create maximum exposure. These gigs are normally project based around a certain launch or event.

Being the creative side of the business has also allowed me to provide my services to other bloggers by creating highly visual media kits, and advertising packages. Again, if you need a media kit, give me a shout 😉

Staff writing

You would think that with 3 blogs that I would be sick of writing, and truth be told, there are times where I am, but having the ability to write on different platforms, and for different audiences keeps me coming back. It also helps that I’m able to set my rates, and pick and choose the topics that I want to write. Since none of my sites are based on entrepreneurship, that’s a topic that I normally gravitate towards.

  2. Digging the diversified hustles! I am full-time freelancing now and I do a combination of blogging, staff writing, virtual assisting, and social media management.

Starting the first fashion and beauty blogging conference in Canada is huge! Congrats :).

  3. Wow, I knew you were busy but this really puts it on the table. Keep up the great work Marissa. A tough balancing act but you seem to be a skillful juggler.

    Cheers,
    Mark

  4. that is quite a few side hustles, but it’s awesome that they are so diverse. I’m looking to diversify my income as well, and the road has been rocky but I’m still enjoying it so far. The freelance writing and such is pretty time consuming, so I’m looking in other directions online to see where I can make some extra cash.

  5. I Wash Cars! – I have been doing it since I got my first car, and it’s a good hobby to get into. They say that if you do what you love then you never have to work a day in your life, and while this isn’t my living, it’s a very good side hustle. It’s fairly cheap too – all you really need to start off is a bucket, a sponge, water and car shampoo (though as you get more into the hobby you can pick up different techniques and supplies to get even better results).

  6. I would love to get more details on your creative services to potentially make a media kit for my growing business! I love seeing people use a variety of skills to live up to their potential and it’s my favorite kind of “company” to do business with!

  7. I have found blogging to be a great side hustle that requires more time invested to get started and then once you become established you can more comfortable put it on cruise control. It’s also a great way to provide value to readers. Additionally, buying and selling on ebay and craigslist has been a great source of side revenue.

  8. That is amazing. All of your side hustles sound very cool, especially the one about running a conference. Your day job also sounds cool. I like it when I hear people have more than one job, a lot of times it is for the money, but it’s also because they have different interests. It just makes the person seem more interesting when they have side hustles.
